Family

Smriti was born in a Delhi based family and was eldest amongst three sisters. Her father who owned courier company is a Punjabi and mother is a Bengali.

In January 2001, Smriti married her childhood friend Zubin Irani. In the year 2001, Smriti gave birth to their child Zohr. In September 2003 Smriti gave birth to their daughter Zoish. Also, Smriti is a stepmother to Shanelle who is Irani's daughter from his previous marriage.

Exit from Kyunki and re-entry

On April 2007, Smriti decided to quit Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi due to a fall-out between her and producer, Ekta Kapoor. Many opined that conflicts between Smriti's commitment towards Kyunki and her ambitious drive to seek an independent identity via her home productions caused friction between herself and Ekta. The final nail in the coffin was thought to be over the issue of finances between Ekta and Smriti, where the latter demanded a raise and the former rejected. Last episode that feature Smriti was telecasted on 6 June 2007, where she dies in a truck accident.[2] After a long hiatus of 11 months, amidst the decline of Kyunki's viewership, Ekta Kapoor got back Smriti into her role in a highly publicized affair, where they both buried their hatchet with each other in a public appearance. She re-appeared on 10 April 2008 in a special episode.[3]

Political career

Smriti joined the leading political party of the country Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the year 2003. The party gave her a ticket to fightLok Sabha elections in the year 2004 from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi where she was fielded against veteran political leader Kapil Sibal. Though, Smriti did not win the election but she continued to work for the party. Looking at her dedication and hard work Smriti was made Vice-President of the Maharashtra Youth Wing. Smriti has been nominated as executive member of the central committee for five times and had been appointed as National Secretary.[4]

Smriti is one of the few people from the entertainment world who have been able to break the myth that actors do not care for people and country but can join politics to bring change for better. Smriti Irani also finds her name mentioned in the autobiography of the former Home Minister and veteran political leader L K Advani My Country My Life.

In the first quarter of the year 2010, Smriti was appointed as the National Secretary of the party and on 24 June 2010, she was appointed as All India President of the Women's Wing of the party i.e. Bhartiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha.[5][6] After becoming President of the women's' cell, Smriti has raised various issues like women empowerment in Indian Military[7] and has shown a red eye towards crime against women and has urged government to take necessary steps to ensure safety of women specially in New Delhi.[8]

In August 2011, she was sworn in as a Member of Parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha.[9]
